Authoritarian Trump followers at WUWT celebrate USA's secession from the world (and reality)

Over the last few days it's become clear that Donald Trump's minders have been unsuccessful in reigning in his megalomania and malignant narcissism. In the one interview since becoming US President, all Trump could talk about was size, and he told multiple lies in doing so. Read the incredible transcript. It was an extraordinary interview. Trump shied away from discussing important matters of state. Instead, as reported in the Washington Post, he was "endlessly obsessed with his popularity".

You've read about people who seriously believe they are Jesus Christ - well that's how Donald Trump behaved. To my mind, he exhibited all the symptoms of grandiosity, delusion and self-obsession. He falsely claimed he would have won the election by "millions" if not for "millions" of fraudulent votes that all went to Hillary Clinton. He falsely claimed that "we had the biggest audience in the history of inaugural speeches". He even went so far as to claim that his much criticised appalling speech in front of the CIA wall of honour drew "the biggest standing ovation since Peyton Manning had won the Super Bowl".

Two bob each way - or Anthony Watts pats Schrödinger's pussy cat

Anthony Watts places two bob each way** on the 97% consensus.  Within the space of 24 hours he is equally convinced:
  • there is virtually no scientific consensus that humans are causing global warming. A potty peer named Monckton sez that 3,896 is not 97.1% of 4014.  Now he's got even a statistician insisting that 3896 divided by 4014 equals only 0.003. Anthony's not too good at arithmetic either, so he places a bet on Monckton;
  • there is virtually 100% consensus that humans are causing global warming.  A blogger in the UK called Andrew Montford who lives on a hill with some bishop or other, writes on behalf of the Global Warming Fan Club (a lobby group to agitate on behalf of the much maligned CO2 - it's plant food you know) and sez everyone knows that humans cause AGW, there's no debate. So Anthony places a bet on the Global Warming Fan Club.
Anthony reckons both are equally true.  He's got both points of view on his website on the same page on the same day - click for archive No Consensus and archive 100% Consensus.  They may be opposite viewpoints but the Right Wing Authoritarian in Anthony is not at all uncomfortable holding two opposing thoughts in his head and simultaneously agreeing with both.

Now the Viscount and the Bishop dweller both agree on one thing, those in positions of authority can't be trusted.  And who is arguably the most powerful human being on earth?  It's the President of the United States of America.  So when he tweets this to his 36,115,998 followers:
...the conspiracy theorists rise up in arms, united against a common foe.  They join together, proud of the diversity of thoughts (within their own heads) and cry "But Cook13 didn't ask if it was dangerous!"

Is Cook et al (2013) really Schrödinger's kitty cat?

As those dastardly scientists have discovered:
Distrust and paranoia about government has a long history, and the feeling that there is a conspiracy of elites can lead to suspicion for authorities and the claims they make. For some, the attraction of conspiracy theories is so strong that it leads them to endorse entirely contradictory beliefs...
...The researchers wanted to know if the contradictory beliefs were due to suspicion of authorities, so they asked 102 college students about the death of Osama bin Laden (OBL). People who believed that "when the raid took place, OBL was already dead," were significantly more likely to also believe that "OBL is still alive." Since bin Laden is not Schrödinger's cat, he must either be alive or dead. ...
..."For conspiracy theorists, those in power are seen as deceptive-even malevolent-and so any official explanation is at a disadvantage, and any alternative explanation is more credible from the start," said the authors. It is no surprise that fear, mistrust, and even paranoia can lead to muddled thinking; when distrust is engaged, careful reasoning can coast on by. "Believing Osama is still alive," they write, 'is no obstacle to believing that he has been dead for years."

Deniers are a muddled lot, aren't they.

** A "bob" = 1 shilling, which is roughly equal to ten cents.  "Two bob each way" is a bet eg on a horse race that the horse will either win or come in the top three in a horse race.  (Australian lingo.)

HotWhoppers: More Denier Weirdness

MobyT | 5:15 PM Feel free to comment!
Talking about right-wing authoritarians: muddled thinking, double standards and compartmentalised brains, from WUWT today:

Middleton's Muddled Thinking

David Middleton accuses Dr Hansen of "electioneering" because he sent an email to a NY Times columnist and speaks out publicly about the impacts of CO2 emissions. Dr Hansen correctly warns us that human actions (burning fossil fuels) are leading to dangerous global warming, a topic that is the subject of Dr Hansens' decades of scientific research.

Middleton doesn't know what electioneering means.  (I expect Middleton believes that he and Watts are entitled to continue to try to deceive the public about climate science for the very reason that it is not a subject in which they can claim expertise.)

Willis' Double Standards

Willis Eschenbach is still absolutely furious (five weeks down the track) that Bora Zivkovic won't allow anti-science trolls, deliberate derailing of threads or spam adverts (eg Viagra) on his blog, which he hosts on Scientific American.

Meanwhile, Anthony continues to moderate comments on WUWT, eventually banning people who challenge his anti-science articles.  But that's okay, isn't it.

Prediction

If there is merit to the "authoritarian" framing then, as I understand# it, the high RWAs who frequent WUWT won't see the inconsistencies or double standards.  We'll see.

Update 1

So far there have been 42 comments on Willis' complaint about moderation, most of which are of the type '"they" are censoring science deniers so that proves climate science is a hoax'.

There are a small number of comments that point out that WUWT is moderated, eliciting four in-line responses from Watts justifying his own WUWT moderation.  Watts even says he uses what Willis complains most about: "Automatic Computer-model-based Censorship" (sic) and none of his acolytes bats an eye.

Update 2

From Willis E, who didn't mean it in the way almost everyone else would take it (ie anyone but a right wing authoritarian climate science denier):
...Perhaps you could explain to us exactly how they are similar, and how your post is anything but a lame attempt to assert a false and repugnant moral equivalence between WUWT and ScAm.
I can't think of a soul who would assert any equivalence between the morally repugnant blog WUWT and Scientific American. (Scientific American might not be perfect, but fair suck o' the sauce bottle.)

#My understanding is based on one speed-read of Altemeyer's book, The Authoritarians.  Don't take my understanding as gospel!
