Is this all there is before COP21? Crowd-sourcing the list of climate science deniers from 2009

There's a denier conference being organised for Paris, calling itself the Paris Climate Challenge. I think it's being organised by the Heartland Institute, but whoever is organising it is rather coy, and doesn't say. Going by the speakers, it could just be the political party, the UKIP. On the other hand, if it's the same as the Heartland Institute effort, then it hasn't decided on the name yet - is it Pandemonium in Paris or is it the Paris Climate Challenge?

Anyway, the one that's being promoted at WUWT (archived here and waybacked here) doesn't have much going for it. About all it's got is a plea for some speakers and a letter written six years ago, back in 2009. The 2009 letter is signed by people who are described as "climate experts", but most can make no such claim. Two of those signatories are listed as deceased: Ernst G Beck and Zbigniew Jaworowski. There may be more.

If you're thinking of signing up to fill one of what will undoubtedly be many empty chairs, you will be entertained by a sad and motley lot of ratbags:

Crowd-sourcing details of deniers

Below is the list of people from the 2009 letter published on the 2015 "Paris Climate Challenge" website, for want of anything more recent. As I said, the list claims the following as "climate experts" but most have no expertise in climate science. They may be "expert" in science denial - a lot of them are associated with denier lobby groups.

I've linked quite a few of them. If anyone is willing to lend a hand, and pick out some and provide links to show their background, whether they are still in the land of the living, main denial "achievements" etc, that would be great. Even if it's only one or two people you look up - every bit will help. It can then be a ready reference for the future. If you do, can you list the number in the list, and their name and I'll add the links.

There are some websites that list science deniers and their background, including desmogblog, the Denier List, and SourceWatch. Links to in-depth articles are also helpful.

  1. According to the whois entry for the site it's Tallbloke who registered it: http://whois.domaintools.com/pcc15.org

  2. Tallbloke was on my site recently and presented a paper which he claimed showed that
Astrophysicists have known for decades that surface temperature is primarily a function of atmospheric mass, not its composition.
Not only was he presenting this to an Astrophysicist, I also happen to know the authors of the paper he presented, and happen to know that it doesn't say what he thinks it says. I was impressed that he chose to just slink away.

    1. This seems an example of the following:
      1) Blah, blah, blah, this paper proves ... blanh, blah.

      2) No it doesn't, and the author says so.

3a) Slink away, with no comment
3b) Say: "Thanks! I Was completely wrong and I'll rethink my position."

How often do people see 3b?

    2. I see 3b all the time. Unfortunately, they usually come back with the same debunked tripe anyway.

  3. Bit short of time right now, but always worth recollecting Tim Ball's epic libel fail. In short, he was accused in the Calgary Herald of inflating his credentials and launched a libel claim, for I think, 300K dollars. Faced with a robust defence, in which the paper counterattacked claiming that Ball 'never had a reputation in the scientific community as a noted climatologist and authority on global warming," and that he "...is viewed as a paid promoter of the agenda of the oil and gas industry rather than as a practicing scientist.', Ball folded, apparently not all that confident in his own reputation:-

And re: David Bellamy, George Monbiot's demolition is worth a read

    http://www.monbiot.com/2005/05/10/junk-science/

If only for the resonant concluding paragraph:

'It is hard to convey just how selective you have to be to dismiss the evidence for climate change. You must climb over a mountain of evidence to pick up a crumb: a crumb which then disintegrates in your palm. You must ignore an entire canon of science, the statements of the world’s most eminent scientific institutions, and thousands of papers published in the foremost scientific journals. You must, if you are David Bellamy, embrace instead the claims of an eccentric former architect, which are based on what appears to be a non-existent data set. And you must do all this while calling yourself a scientist.'

  4. I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered together at the White House, with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.
John F. Kennedy, opening remarks to a 1962 dinner honoring Nobel Laureates

Anyway... not a whole lot of climate scientists on that list, I notice. It would be interesting to include the ages of those listed and how long it's been since they conducted research, if at all.

    1. For that matter, how long it's been since some of them drew breath.

  5. Ole Humlum (74) is the owner of the site climate4you which seems to contain a bewildering mix of data - a lot fresh but seems some older material may have landed there based on certain selection bias - mixed with some interpretations.. Uninitiated might get confused between facts and fiction..

    1. Humlum is also the proud originator of a graph with a polynomial fit to temperature data, without any justification for using such a polynomial.

And he is the proud author of a paper that uses a method that, even with artificial data created by a climate model that explicitly has greenhouse gas forcing leading temperature, will conclude that temperature led the greenhouse gas increase.

Confirmation bias would be the kindest interpretation.

  7. Tallbloke is a strong proponent of a luminous aether, something disproven in 1887 by the Michelson-Morley experiments, not to mention thinking that climate on the surface of the Earth is driven by numerological cycles of the planets (cref astrology).

Which sets my rather low expectations for anything he's involved with....

    1. It makes me a bit sad to think that people who obviously contributed a lot to science in their lifetime might only be remembered (by some people) for their rejection of science. Not just Durrenberger but a few others on the denier list as well.

  9. Gerhard Kramm has been well covered by the Rabett here. Unfortunately his wife, Nicole Molders, also decided to associate herself with some of the silly arXiv papers Kramm keeps trying to push. Akasofu is still active in the crank business as evidenced by these letters to the editor about glacier retreat here and here.

  11. No. 169, Bob Zybach, is known to me personally. You've probably all met people like Bob. He is intelligent, but not nearly as intelligent as he thinks he is. His thinking on certain ecological issues is penetrating, but on any topic whatsoever he insists he knows more than you do. He's an extremely combative guy who responds the mildest criticism by going on the offensive. He's a compulsive contrarian, and regards the existence of a scientific consensus, in any field, as evidence of a conspiracy, with himself as the sole, heroic dissenter. I'd chalk his denial of AGW up to sheer bloody-mindedness as much as anything.

  12. No 62, Fred Goldberg, is a Swede, born in 1943, with a doctors degree in welding technology, received in 1975 from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. He is listed as ”adjunct professor”, but the correct term ”docent”, which is an honorary title in Sweden. His academic career ended in1975.
Back In 1966 Fred Goldberg participated as a mechanical assistant on the Stockholm University Svalbard Expedition, drilling ice cores and taking bottom sediments. I think he has a genuine interest in the Arctic since then. In 1972 he registered a company under the name ”The Swedish Polar Institute”. It is still active, doing some kind of computer business. It’s only employee is Fred Goldberg.
His interest in climate pseudoscience dates from 2004. He has delivered several talks at the Heartland conferences.

  13. #131 William M. Schaffer is currently at the Univ. of Arizona.

His research centers on applying mathematical chaos theory to ecology. Climate may be a source of the chaos (??), as for jack rabbits.

WMS is 186th and last on a list of "Flat Earth Society" ?? 'Skeptics' at jer-skepticscorner.blogspot.com on 2Feb2008.
There is also a list of 25 deceased skeptics that could easily be cross checked with your numbered list, which is from 2009. If the latter could be alphabetized.

From www.eecg.utoronto.ca/~prall/... table of "Skeptical Authors on Climate Science". WMS is 15th on the list of 'citations'.

Neither William M. Schaffer nor RW Durrenberger are included in the lists of deniers at desmogblog, Denier List, nor Sourcewatch.
From a browse thru Google pages, Durrenberger's offense seems to be signing petitions. I saw no suggestion of Schaffer's sin.

  14. I'm afraid there might be a mistake in #2. The Göran Ahlgren who signed the petition is most likely NOT the urologist who shows up in a google search, but instead his namesake who's a member of the the so called Stockholmsinitiativet. According to their homepage (in Swedish, archived here), he used to be a lecturer of organic chemistry at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Stockholmsinitiativet is a lobbyist group with the self-proclaimed aim of trying to influence climate policy in Sweden into becoming more "rational". Ingemar Nordin (#112) and Peter Stilbs (#144) are also members of the group. Stockholmsinitiativet's activities include publishing a blog similar to WUWT and writing petitions to the Swedish Parliament. The blog (in Swedish, current front page archived here) is of the garden variety (the planet isn't warming or if it is it's the sun, polar ice isn't decreasing, CO2 is good for us, it's a conspiracy, etc, ad nauseum).

This petition from 2014 by Stockholmsinitiativet (archived here) (in)conveniently collects many of the Swedish global warming sceptics. It was sent to the speaker of the Swedish Parliament to suggest a congressional hearing regarding climate and energy policy. It questions mainstream science with references to Judith Curry's site and WUWT. The proposed speakers who would inform the Parliament about climate change include Nils-Axel Mörner (#107), Gösta Walin (#158), Ingemar Nordin (#112) and Ole Humlum (#74). It is also signed by Wibjörn Karlén (#82).

Much more can be said about the individual "skeptics" but I think this is enough for now.

As a side note, it saddened me to see Ian D. Clark - an excellent isotope geochemist – on this list. Perhaps he's following the lead of another great former isotope geochemist Claude Allègre.
