A small facelift

I've been making a few minor changes to the blog, like the "go to top" arrow on the side and scroll bar down the bottom, and other cosmetic changes. I've still got a couple of things to change on the mobile version, though it should still be working the way it is.

I've tested things as far as I'm able, but if anyone notices any glitches when navigating the site or commenting, please let me know.

  1. It appears more responsive, on my computer anyway. Previously I would try to scroll and there was a noticeable jumpiness.

  2. A minor detail which I find annoying is when clicking on Comments it jumps to the end of the comments instead of starting at the beginning. Not sure that is fixable.

  3. I dunno about the others, but on my small laptop "the scroll bar down the bottom" takes away precious space and I know the key combination to go the top by heart.

    1. How small is your laptop, Victor? Is the problem in typing or reading? (The bar is semi-transparent. I can probably make it more so, or make it narrower.)

    2. I'm somewhat with VV on this. The interface has all the controls necessary, from scrollbar to key_combo and minimalism is important in interface design. Workspace is king. Just ask John Mashey, who has 9 screens to my humble two :-)

    3. I've tried it narrower, but if you still don't like it I'll remove it and just leave the side arrow. (I need two hands to get to the top via the keyboard - the fn key on the left and an arrow on the right. Or one click of the bar or arrow - one of them is staying :D)

    4. The bottom "scroll to top" bar is gone. The "scroll to top" side arrow is still there for those who like it (like me)

    5. For me with my A4 computer this is better. Thanks.

How did you get an extra link to the top of the comments. This is a blogger blog, right? I want that a well.

    6. Which links are you talking about, Victor? The ones at the top of the RHS sidebar or the ones at the top of the blog article, to the right?

(The sidebar ones are easier than the ones on the top of the comments.)

    7. I had not noticed the new side bar item. I was thinking of the difficult links at the top of the blog article. I program a little HTML and CSS.

    8. I'll do an article explaining in the next few days. I modified some code from another blogger. (It's coded for XML - which is what the blog is.)

    9. :) I already thought you did some crazy tricks like that. Would that post also include tips on how to moderate/edit comments like Wordpress bloggers can? My guess is that that also needs XML editing, right?

    10. No, I don't know of anyone who has developed anything like that for blogger. Not that I've seen. I doubt it's possible or someone would have done it.

Once you post a comment it's either there or it's deleted. The only workaround is deleting it, adding your own comments, and reposting it. Far too much work under normal circumstances. And fiddly. (I've done it only once or twice - to keep a comment in line with the comment policy.)

  4. I like it. But because I tend to navigate via 'recent comments' I'd prefer this above 'latest articles'. I like the scroll up arrow but then have to scroll back down again to get to recent comments. Maybe move language option down too?

    1. Comments are better than the articles? [Sobs quietly]

The language option stays up top - there are visitors from a lot of different countries. Happy to move the comments higher - is there another vote for that?

  5. Thank you, Sou. I often use your Blog Roll to link to other sites (after thoroughly reading HW of course) and that new index makes it very easy.
