It's been pointed out before that there appears to be a disproportionate number of engineers among the pseudoskeptics. There have been various explanations offered for this, but I don't really want to get into the stale, cliched scientists vs. engineers debate.Magmanoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313427464944392482.post-65363269935807978362015-09-17T19:02:20.838+10:002015-09-17T19:02:20.838+10:00I work in IT, in the UK and the Register is part o...I work in IT, in the UK and the Register is part of my regular reading, it’s a blokey, gossipy publication, I guess the target demographic are best summed up as 'The studio audience for Top Gear', (which may not mean much to anyone outside the UK, I guess). A regular feature is scenes from the news re-enacting using PlayMobil (Toy) figures, which gives you a flavour of its seriousness.

The main writer of its denial pieces these days, including his one, is one Lewis Page, formerly an officer in the Navy, and author of books on military history. He seems to have taken over from Steve Goddard, who ceased his association with the publication after an actual climate scientist wrote in to point out that his arctic Ice nonsense was In fact nonsense, or to quote exactly
'Besides this significant error, the rest of the article consists almost entirely of misleading, irrelevant, or erroneous information about Arctic sea ice that add nothing to the understanding of the significant long-term decline that is being observed.'

(I won't link, but the title of the article was 'arctic Ice refuses to melt as ordered').

Most recently, Page wrote about the 2015 arctic ice minimum and the re-opening of the North West Passage, in which he correctly stated that a vessel named the Manhattan navigated the passage in the sixties.

What he failed to include was the small fact that Manhattan was refitted as an icebreaker for the voyage and supported by four other super-ice-breakers, which in an article on sea ice, one might just expect a serious journalist to mention.

So the Reg is neither serious nor credible on climate, but reliably contrarian and thus an excellent candidate for the denialist echo chamber, and quotation by Worrall/Watts.Phil Clarkehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15744659873337514317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313427464944392482.post-5270935871759252542015-09-17T12:49:45.903+10:002015-09-17T12:49:45.903+10:00Reminds me of dumb and dumber: https://www.youtube...Reminds me of dumb and dumber: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX5jNnDMfxA

EW: What are the chances the pause will continue.
MET: Not good.
EW: You mean not good like 1 in 100?
MET: More like 1 in 1,000,000.
EW: So you're telling me there's a chance!
