They love to say "correlation does not equal causation" but all the posters bar Willis don't actually understand how to calculate correlation, let alone autocorrelation, which is what is needed to infer a relationship between two time series. Willis knows what autocorrelation is but then calculates it incorrectly, conveniently enabling him to claim trends are non-significant when they are actually significant.

That's why they waste digital real estate on "wiggle matching." The chart will show if they ...I agree pretty much. The chart will show if they are travelling in the same direction or different directions (ie positive or negative correlation over time or none). It says nothing about whether there is any causal relationship. You'd have to go to the physics for that.

The chart will also give a quick view of how much temp rises for a given rise in CO2. Any of the charts will show that of course. It doesn't have to be the min to max chart. The data is the same so it's a matter of reading off the correct axis. In this case there was a rise of approx 85 ppm CO2 and a rise of approx 0.6 degrees Celsius over the period from 1959 to 2013. (That's not exact. I don't have the data at hand so I've just read off the chart roughly.)

The main point I was wanting to make was how easy it is to create an illusion of whatever point a person wants to make. It wouldn't fool anyone who is used to charting or working with numerical data in general, but it's enough to fool the average science denier and maybe even ordinary people.Souhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08818999735123752034noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2313427464944392482.post-89922103976775563542014-01-13T18:51:30.048+11:002014-01-13T18:51:30.048+11:00As an aside - if you scale any two variables min t...As an aside - if you scale any two variables min to max will they not give the appearance of correlaton?

See e.g. http://boingboing.net/2013/01/01/correlation-between-autism-dia.html

The art of graph preparation is an intricate one, full of pitfalls for the unwary.
