Happy holidays and all that

Wishing everyone greetings of the season, whatever the season is for you - winter, summer, Christmas, new year or  just an excuse for a holiday if you are fortunate enough.

If you've noticed I've been a bit distant this past few months, I'll be back in the new year and may even sneak in a couple of blog articles before then.

Thanks for all your support this past year, and best wishes for 2018.

  1. And a happy and festive transition season from 2017 to 2018 for you, Sou, and all the regulars at HotWhopper. 2017 is one year that I'll be truly glad to see the back of, and though there's much trouble ahead too, I'm hoping that we see eventually sense triumph over greed, ideology, and megalomania.

  2. We could hold a sweepstake on how many associates of Trump get charges filed against them this year.

  3. Thanks for your efforts to save us from ourselves.

  5. And best wishes to Sou and all from the wintery hemisphere (where we have proper reindeer, not bouncy marsupials).

  7. Well it's 'The Snowman' on tv yet again. Sigh....but as its 5.30 here, wherever you are in Australia it must be Christmas day.

A happy Christmas to sou and I hope your travails during the past few months have been happily resolved.

  8. I'm relieved to report that the North Pole is 25 degrees cooler this Christmas eve than last, and hope it will stay frozen into the New Year.

But some people may have other ideas.

  10. Lovely to hear from all of you - Bernard J, Millicent, Dennis, Magma, ATTP, Tonyb, Russell and Eli.

Down here it's only 24 minutes till Boxing Day, which is a great day for cricket fans (the bat kind, not orthopterans).

Sensational breaking news. Entire England ashes team found locked in basement of Australian embassy in London.

Fraudulent so called ashes team will be recalled. Series to be cancelled. England to retain ashes urn. Rematch in due course.

  12. I am informed by the most reliable of sources that the new blue passport is such a powerful expression of post-Brexit “independence and sovereignty” that minor setbacks like losing the Ashes and economic collapse are mere nothings to us Brits. No doubt we will all be proudly singing "Land of Hope And Glory" while we search through litter bins for something to eat.

Oh dear, I must be one of the "metropolitan elite". Well, I don't live in London, but its not hard to be elite in a world full of numpties.

  13. Sou, I like how Dennis Horne put it:
"Thanks for your efforts to save us from ourselves."

Happy Holidays and a very happy New Year,
and thank you for all your efforts to bring a touch of sanity and information into the public dialogue.

  15. In case anyone missed it there's a recent paper that demonstrates the principle of GIGO:

    https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2214242817300426

It also indicates that when ideology-based lobby groups try to play science the outcome may be a tad comporomised...

Given the paper's conclusion that ECS = 0.6 °C, and the fact that we've already realised approximately twice as much warming with considerably less than half a doubling of CO₂, one wonders why the editors didn't tap the authors on the shoulder and ask for a critical self-assessment of the conflict of their conclusions with empirical data. Instead, there's no self-reflection at all in the paper, and no reference to the "natural" forcings that apparently underpin (as Abbott and Marohassy would have it...) most of contemporary warming. There is however an accusation in the conclusion that climatologists use GCMs (which produce higher estimates) because they've spent a lot of money on them...

ATTP has had a poke at the paper:

  16. Yes, "comporomised" is a real word. It means that there are fatal holes in the object under question...

    ;-)

  17. It is probably related to the word "collorusion" which, I believe, stems from the Russian.
